Medemer Philosophy Key to Ethiopia’s Development in Global Context, Says PM Abiy

Addis Ababa:The Ethiopian Medemer philosophy offers a strategic framework for the nation to navigate the rapidly changing global landscape, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed asserted today.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Prime Minister Abiy addressed the inaugural session of the first-year term of the 7th House of People's Representatives, where he discussed global developments, Ethiopia's past experiences, and the country's ongoing efforts to strengthen its self-reliance.

He emphasized that Ethiopia's ability to benefit from global changes hinges on its preparedness. Those nations that fail to anticipate shifts in the global order may face significant challenges, Abiy warned.

Highlighting Ethiopia's historical experiences, the Prime Minister noted the consequences of not preparing for major shifts, such as past industrial and technological revolutions. He urged the nation to learn from previous setbacks and develop the capacity to identify emerging opportunities and challenges.

The evolving geopolitical dynamics in regions like the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Middle East present both challenges and opportunities for Ethiopia, given its strategic location, Abiy explained. He stressed that responding to such changes requires more than mere dissatisfaction with current conditions; it demands organized thinking, institutional development, and continuous improvement.

In this context, Abiy identified Medemer as a distinctively Ethiopian approach to enhancing national capacity and responding to global changes. This philosophy emphasizes combining Ethiopia's diverse strengths, experiences, history, culture, and values to build greater national resilience.

Abiy underscored the need for Ethiopia to develop solutions that are reflective of its own realities and historical context rather than adopting those developed elsewhere. He also highlighted the importance of modernizing Ethiopia's statehood while drawing on indigenous ideas and values to bolster national unity and development.

He advocated for the Medemer philosophy to be integrated into the nation's economic and institutional reforms, covering areas such as macroeconomic policy, security, manufacturing, agriculture, education, health, energy, and foreign relations. Medemer serves as a framework for harnessing Ethiopia's collective potential, strengthening institutions, and preparing the nation to adapt to and influence the emerging global order.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Abiy called for continued efforts to enhance national capacity and institutions capable of anticipating global changes, turning them into opportunities for Ethiopia's progress.
