The Tenth and eleventh editions of the African Science Academy (ASA) Maths Masterclass are set to be held in the Eastern and Greater-Accra Regions on March 12 and March 14, 2024.

ASA, with support from Tullow Oil, and in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service, are organising the one-day hands-on capacity building for 80 Senior High School Mathematics teachers drawn from Secondary Schools in the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly in the Eastern region .

A statement issued in Accra by the organizers said the Masterclass was an educational symposium designed to share and broaden the knowledge of Senior High School Mathematics teachers.

It said the selected teachers to be in attendance would share, discuss and widen their scope of knowledge in addition to coming up with more engaging and practical ways of teaching Mathematics.

This edition seeks to equip and steer maths teachers through effective teaching techniques and methods for teaching some challenging maths concepts using
technology and direct instruction.

The statement said since its inception in 2017, the ASA Math Masterclass had been held across several regions in the country, making an impact in the lives of over 700 teachers and more than 55,000 students.

Founded by the African Gifted Foundation, the African Science Academy is an all-girls STEM school for females all across Africa who have interest in Maths and Science.

ASA also has a dream of changing the mindset of Ghanaians-especially females towards STEM education and where possible, assist them in finding their passion in these fields.

Dr Eric Nkansah, Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has asked stakeholders in the pre-tertiary education sector to uphold values that will help build a 21st-century educational system.

He said for the youth of Ghana to be able to compete effectively and secure decent job opportunities in the 21st century, leaders in the field of education needed to equip themselves with appropriate skills and knowledge that would help them to impact the needed competencies in the children they teach.

Dr Nkansah was addressing a cross-section of stakeholders in education at a forum in Koforidua as part of his two-day working visit to the Eastern region.

In attendance were some staff of the Eastern Regional Education Directorate, the Conference of Directors of Education (CODE), the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS), the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), the Conference of Managers of Educational Units (COMEU), Association of Accountants, Associations of Domestic Bursars,
Association of Suppliers, Association of Internal Auditors, and other staff of the service.

Dr Nkansah pointed out that the government was making efforts for the teachers to acquire such crucial skills through a series of inventions which had been put in place.

He encouraged stakeholders in education to be creative, innovative, collaborate and cooperate with each other, since that was the best way to manage 21st Century organisations.

Dr Nkansah expressed his management gratitude to the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Seth Kwame Acheampong for his support and commitment to improving quality education and learning outcomes in the region.

Fourteen basic schools in the Tema Metropolis will be competing in the second season of the Intellect School Quiz competition (ISQ).

The quiz, which would take place between March 22 and July 5, 2024, would see the pupils competing in four categories.

Mr Bennett Emman Raymond, the Chief Executive Officer for the ISQ, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the launch of the competition that the quiz was aimed at inspiring and encouraging pupils from kindergarten through junior high school to go beyond their common knowledge.

Mr Raymond said the competition would also serve as a connection between theory and application of the principles they have learned and inculcate knowledge in future leaders.

‘Quizzes are one of the instructions used to assess or evaluate the standard performance of learners and teachers as well,’ he added.

He said it would also encourage fun learning methods and the enhancement of general knowledge among the participants.

He said the selected schools would have to present three can
didates each for the competition, adding that the best teacher as well as the pupil who would emerge as the winner would each receive a certificate for participation, products from sponsors, a trophy, medals, a cash prize, and exercise books.

Madam Mabel Kyeraah Twum, a phonics teacher at Oninku Primary School, and the quiz mistress, said the kindergarten level of the quiz would involve identification of sounds by actions, blending of three and four letter words, including digraphs, and dictation for the first stage, which would then progress to the next stage with jolly phonics.

Madam Twum advised the schools to motivate all the KG contestants even when they get evicted from the competition.

Selected pupils from Kindergarten (KG) schools in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis in the Western Region on Tuesday participated in a march pass to commemorate the 67th pre-Independence Day celebration at Sekondi.

The celebration was on the theme: ‘Imbibing Patriotism at Early stage: The key to Growth and Development of Learners and Nation as a Whole.’

A total of 31 schools participated in the march pass, which was interspersed with cultural performances, masquerade dance and other entertaining activities to promote the rich Ghanaian culture.

Mrs Sally Nelly Coleman, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Director of Education, speaking at the opening of the event thanked the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) for their support and contributions in improving upon teaching and learning as well as access to early childhood development education in the Metropolis.

She said this year’s KG schools celebration was the 31st edition, and that her office would put in place measures to sustain the activity in
the years ahead.

Mrs Coleman urged the citizenry to embrace the Independence Day celebration with unity and one accord to ensure a peaceful and progressive nation.

She also entreated parents to keep teaching their children about the cultural and traditional values of the country so they would grow to respect the Ghanaian identity.

The Metro Education Director encouraged teachers to support the children during their early stages and nurture their talents and skills to help them become productive citizens in future.

Mr Abdul-Mumin Issah, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), urged the pupils to be patriotic citizens and lead chaste lives to become useful for society.

He also advised them to take their studies seriously to become responsible adults and productive citizens for their families and the nation at large.

‘To our parents, endeavour to instill good morals and values in your wards as the family is the basic unit of society, because it’s very disappointing to see students of today
insulting leaders of the country on various media channels,’ he stated.

Nana Akua Kudu II, Queen Mother of the Essikado Traditional Area, who chaired the occasion thanked the STMA, Metro Director of Education, teachers, and parents for providing good educational foundation for their children.

She, however, reiterated the need for parents to continue to be good mentors to their children to help them become responsible citizens.

The Information Service Department (ISD), in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has initiated a sensitization campaign aimed at educating selected communities on gender-based violence and child trafficking.

The month-long exercise, which commenced on yesterday March 4, 2024, would focus on educating community members on various issues related to gender-based violence, including child abuse, domestic violence, and other forms of abuse, as well as addressing all types of trafficking.

Six municipalities and districts in the Bono Region chosen for the campaign, included, Wenchi, Sunyani West, Berekum, and Dormaa Municipalities, Tain, and Jaman North Districts, with more than 2,000 communities expected to participate in the movement.

During the campaign, ISD staff in the six municipalities and districts would visit and engage with traditional and opinion leaders, churches, mosques, utilize information centers and vans, and interact with individuals to disseminate the infor
mation.

Mr. Imoro Ayibani, the Bono Regional Director of ISD speaking at the official launch in Sunyani, stated that the selection of those six communities were based on a baseline survey that identified prevalent gender-based violence and trafficking issues.

He observed that many instances of abuse occurred within those communities but often go unreported, therefore, this campaign aims to raise awareness about such abuses, empower individuals to address this hidden violence against themselves, friends, parents, and family members through the appropriate channels.

Mr. Ayibani gave assurances that the exercise at the end would empower community members to report instances of abuse to help reduce violence within the communities.

Additionally, he mentioned that the exercise would aid in data collection to inform government policies, and decision-making processes.

He urged community members to refrain from abusing the toll-free number provided as part of the exercise for reporting issues, as it was essential
for the number to serve its intended purpose effectively.

The Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Area, Awulae Angama Tu-Agyan II has presented a set of musical instruments to the Gwiraman Senior High School at Bamiango in the Nzema-East Municipality.

The donation is to, among other things, equip the students to train very well towards the 67th Independence Anniversary march pass on March 06 every year.

Making the presentation, Awulae Tu-Agyan II who is also the Ag. President at the Western Regional House of Chiefs said it has always been his desire to provide the school with the set of band instruments to tap the innate talents, capabilities, and skills of students in the world of work after school.

Awulae Angama Tu-Agyan II said the instruments would assist them to train very well and be enlisted in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the Military Academy, the Ghana Police Service (GPS), Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and other security agencies in the country.

Awulae Angama Tu-Agyan II congratulated the school for placing first in last year’s Independence Ann
iversary March pass though the students trained with wooden band items made up of bamboo sticks.

He said the traditional council would assist the school with the necessary equipment, tools, and logistics to enable the students to compete with big sister schools in the cities.

The Paramount Chief Lauded the school for performing creditably in last year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

Awulae Angama Tu-Agyan II expressed deep concern about parents who refused to enroll their children in the school but rather sent them away to schools outside the area.

He appealed to parents to halt the practise and allow their children to continue secondary education in the town.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Gwiraman Senior High School, an Assistant Headmaster, Administration, Mr Francis Ainoo congratulated the Paramount Chief for his immense contributions and efforts towards the development of the school.

He said Awulae Tu-Agyan had been a force behind the school working hand
in hand with school management to knock on the corridors of power to get a bus for the school.

He said the school had been chalking successes on the 6th of March past over the years even without such instruments.

Mr Ainoo said Gwiraman Senior High School had been performing well in the WASSCE in the last five years.
