Ethiopian Prime Minister Vows to Protect National Interests

Addis Adaba:Ethiopia is fully prepared to confront and repel threats directed against the country, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed affirmed today. He pledged that the newly established Medemer Government will remain focused on protecting national interests and advancing Ethiopia's ambitions.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Prime Minister Abiy made these remarks after his appointment for a second term during the government-formation session of the first working year of the seventh House of People's Representatives. He formally began his second term by taking the oath of office.

The government-formation session follows the June 1 Seventh General Election, in which over 54 million citizens participated, according to the National Election Board of Ethiopia. Prime Minister Abiy expressed gratitude to the millions who voted, noting that their participation strengthened the nation and highlighted the growing maturity of Ethiopia's democratic culture.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Ethiopia and the world are facing rapidly changing dynamics, underlining the importance of preparedness. He noted that Ethiopia has learned from past experiences of inadequate preparation and has now made necessary preparations to address challenges and hostile acts.

Abiy stressed that unity and collective effort are essential for overcoming challenges, calling on citizens to move forward together as equals. He assured that Ethiopia's development will create opportunities for all, with 'winning citizens, not losers.'

Reflecting on development, he highlighted the expansion of summer wheat production as an indicator of Ethiopia's agricultural transformation and potential for achieving food sovereignty.

Regarding political cooperation, Abiy emphasized working with competing political actors for national interests, demonstrating that political differences do not hinder cooperation on critical issues.

On sea access, the Prime Minister reiterated that securing a reliable outlet remains a national priority, emphasizing peaceful engagement and negotiation to achieve this goal. He framed this within Ethiopia's broader aspirations to contribute to regional transformation.

Abiy invoked Ethiopia's recent challenges, noting they have strengthened the country's determination to preserve unity and pursue national ambitions. He highlighted a shift in concerns towards Ethiopia's ambitions in the Red Sea rather than fears of disintegration.

As Ethiopia begins a new political chapter, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of learning from the past, staying prepared for emerging challenges, and pursuing national aspirations, viewing the new political era as an opportunity to achieve tangible progress.
