Bangkok:Ethiopia is strengthening its international financial partnerships while shifting its focus from debt restructuring to attracting fresh investment capital, according to Eyob Tekalign, Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Eyob is leading an Ethiopian delegation to the 2026 International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group Annual Meetings. He emphasized that the country's international economic engagement is increasingly guided by national priorities. The summit presents Ethiopia with a vital platform to deepen economic partnerships, attract foreign investment, and secure development financing on its own terms.
Ethiopia aims to form high-value partnerships that reflect its historical standing, market size, and broader economic potential. This strategy builds on significant breakthroughs in external debt relief, with the country finalizing agreements with bilateral creditors and nearing completion of negotiations with commercial lenders, including a preliminary agreement with Eurobond holders.
With its debt profile restored, Ethiopia is using the global gathering to pursue additional development financing and to showcase its economic reform model. The Governor highlighted Ethiopia's efforts to share its restructuring experiences with other developing nations facing similar fiscal challenges, emphasizing that the country's international engagement is rooted in its national priorities and the Medemer philosophy.
Domestically, the central bank is opening the banking sector to foreign competition for the first time in five decades. This policy aims to introduce fresh capital, dynamic competition, and modern financial services, encouraging domestic banks to strengthen their capital reserves and resilience.
The Ethiopian financial sector is viewed as having vast growth potential, with incoming applications from regional and pan-African banking institutions being prioritized. The Governor confirmed progress in licensing discussions with regional lenders, anticipating expanded competition within the year.
In addition to financial sector reforms, Ethiopia is advancing its digital transformation, including the rapid adoption of digital payments and AI expansion. The National Bank asserts that Ethiopia's evolving relationships with global partners reflect a mature, mutually respectful alliance focused on long-term economic transformation.
