Federal Government Establishes Caretaker Administration in Tigray Region

Accra:The federal government has set up a six-month caretaker administration for the Tigray Region. This move comes as part of efforts to restore peace and stability, rebuild infrastructure, and prepare the region for free and transparent elections.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the decision to establish a provisional administration followed a resolution by the House of Federation and a binding decision by the Federal Government's Council of Ministers. The administration is tasked with restoring public services and enabling the return of displaced people, among other responsibilities.

The statement from the Office of the Prime Minister highlighted that previous attempts to resolve conflicts in Tigray, under the Pretoria Agreement, were obstructed by the TPLF leadership. It accused the TPLF of rejecting peace and initiating conflict, which ended in their defeat.

The administration aims to break the cycle of conflict in Tigray, allowing its people to achieve lasting peace and self-governance. It will also work to strengthen Tigray's position within Ethiopia's federal system and promote development.

The caretaker administration will coordinate with federal and regional security forces to enhance stability and facilitate disarmament and reintegration efforts. It is also responsible for promoting social healing and preparing for reconstruction.

The administration's mandate focuses on routine governance and election preparations, excluding long-term strategic decisions. It will function under the oversight of the Federal Government.

The appointed officials for the caretaker administration include Assefa Abreha Hagos, Dr. Tewodros Aregawe W/Selassie, Brigadier General Gebre-Egziabher Beyene Hailu, Redae Halefom W/Selassie, and Dr. Shishay Amare. These leaders will receive guidance and support from the Federal Government to implement their duties effectively.

The six-month transition period prioritizes peace, reconstruction, and preparations for an inclusive election to return Tigray to regular regional governance.
