Ethiopia’s Health Sector Shows Notable Advancements Over Five Years

Addis Ababa:The Ministry of Health has reported significant progress in the country's health sector over the past five years, marked by a reduction in maternal and child mortality rates. This announcement was made as part of the celebrations for World Pharmacists' Day 2026, themed 'Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures.'According to Ethiopian News Agency, the event brought together pharmacists, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders to celebrate the pharmacy profession and discuss strategies to enhance the national health system. Senior Technical Advisor Bekele Ashagrie, speaking for the State Minister of Health, acknowledged the critical role pharmacists play in improving health indicators and access to medicines.Bekele highlighted ongoing initiatives in innovation, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and emergency response. The government is modernizing information systems with cloud-based data to improve the planning and management of medicine supply.Efforts are also underway to boost domestic m anufacturing capacity through inspections, technical support, and capacity-building programs aimed at strengthening the pharmaceutical sector's operational performance.Dr. Daniel Waktole, President of the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association, stressed the importance of pharmacists in delivering safe, effective, and equitable healthcare. He noted their role in chronic disease management, health screenings, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals.World Pharmacists' Day, established by the International Pharmaceutical Federation, is celebrated annually on September 25. In Ethiopia, the day is observed with a focus on professional development and public health since 2020, alongside the Ethiopian Pharmacists' Day on December 4.
