Emergency Relief Supplies Reach Drought-Affected Communities in Afar Region

Adama:Afar Emergency humanitarian aid is currently being delivered to communities in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, where drought has severely impacted vulnerable households and individuals facing climate-induced challenges.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the first batch of relief supplies has been dispatched from the central grain warehouse in Adama city, focusing on high-priority individuals and families across the region. In Girifo Kebele of Bidu Woreda, residents have started receiving the aid, which they say is crucial as drought conditions continue to threaten their livelihoods and food security.

Meyrem Abdu, a beneficiary, expressed that the assistance would significantly help her children and other family members dealing with food shortages. She appreciated the government's prompt response to the crisis affecting local communities. Asiya Mohammed, another recipient, noted that the intervention would alleviate the hardships her family and other residents are experiencing.

Mohammed Abdella, Team Leader of Inventory Quality and Control at the Afar Region Disaster Risk Management Commission, explained that the distribution targets the most vulnerable groups. He mentioned that the region had been using its own resources to support communities before supplementing efforts with additional supplies from the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission.

Yesuf Mohammed, Head of the Bidu Woreda Agriculture and Natural Resources Office, highlighted that the drought, linked to climate change, has caused significant challenges for residents. He described the humanitarian intervention as both timely and essential. The ongoing distribution aims to provide immediate relief as authorities continue to mobilize assistance for those affected by the drought.
