Addis Ababa:Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that the first 26 buses converted from conventional fuel to natural gas have officially entered service in Addis Ababa, marking a significant transformation in the city's public transportation system.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, this development is expected to reduce foreign currency spending on fuel, operational costs of public transit, and passenger fares by half. The conversion follows extensive efforts to transport locally produced natural gas to the capital, establish refueling stations, and retrofit existing buses.
The Prime Minister highlighted that this conversion demonstrates Ethiopia's progress in domestic technological capabilities and technology transfer. He also revealed plans for the arrival of 400 additional natural gas-powered buses, aiming to further reduce reliance on conventional fuels.
PM Abiy reiterated the government's commitment to enhancing citizens' lives by improving food security, housing, and transportation facilities.
