Manila:Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Tibor Nagy has criticized Eritrea's leadership, describing the country as an unstable presence in its region.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Nagy highlighted Eritrea's conflicts with its neighbors, including Yemen across the Red Sea. He labeled President Isaias Afwerki as a dictator and criticized the absence of a constitution and elections in Eritrea, as well as the practice of indefinite national service.
Nagy emphasized the hardships faced by Eritreans, noting the significant number of people who have fled the country and the difficulties for those remaining. He pointed out the lack of internet access, isolation, and the inability to use credit cards, describing these conditions as an "unbearable burden."
He further criticized the country's human rights record, citing imprisonment without trial and extensive abuses, characterizing the situation as "a tragedy."
