Manila:ECA Deputy Executive Secretary Mama Keita emphasized the importance of multilingualism in enhancing Africa's international cooperation. She highlighted its role in various sectors, including diplomacy, trade, education, science, culture, and development during an event for International Translation Day.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Keita stated that multilingualism facilitates communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries, thereby fostering stronger international cooperation and mutual understanding. She stressed the necessity of access to information in languages people comprehend for meaningful societal participation.
Keita pointed out the importance of overcoming language barriers to ensure knowledge reaches all communities, particularly in an interconnected world. She acknowledged the critical role of language professionals, such as translators and interpreters, in enabling cross-linguistic dialogue and the exchange of ideas and decisions.
Within the United Nations, language professionals are essential in making documents available in the organization's official languages, thereby enabling member states and stakeholders to engage with the UN's work. Keita also linked multilingualism with cultural diversity, highlighting its role in promoting tolerance and respect among different cultures.
Rita Bissoonauth, Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office, added that translation is vital for the international exchange of knowledge and literature. She cautioned against the potential for AI-driven language technologies to exacerbate existing linguistic inequalities, noting that many African languages lack representation in digital resources. Bissoonauth advocated for technology that complements human expertise, emphasizing the need for cultural knowledge and contextual understanding in effective translation.
International Translation Day is celebrated annually to recognize the contributions of translators and interpreters to global communication, cooperation, cultural exchange, and peace.
