Addis ababa: The "Medemer State" is committed to ensuring the sustainable welfare of citizens by implementing comprehensive strategies to accelerate economic growth, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh said. The Deputy Prime Minister made the remarks during the inauguration and commissioning of an expansion and digitalization project at the Amhara Regional Health Bureau.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh emphasized that the government is prioritizing key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, digital services, and manufacturing to spur economic growth and expand opportunities for citizens. He explained that the wealth and economic opportunities generated through these sectors are primarily intended to strengthen social services, particularly education and healthcare.
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted ongoing reforms in the health sector, which are yielding tangible results, bolstered by enhanced disease prevention and control efforts. He mentioned initiatives to boost local production of life-saving medicines and essential medical supplies, aiming to reduce the country's reliance on imports.
To improve maternal health and promote a healthier society, comprehensive care is being provided to mothers from pregnancy through childbirth and the postnatal period. Additionally, the government is expanding health insurance coverage to ensure low-income citizens have access to essential medical services, describing this approach as exemplary in Africa.
DPM Temesgen noted that Ethiopian hospitals are increasingly adopting modern technologies to improve medical services and reduce the need for citizens to travel abroad for treatment. He expressed confidence that Bahir Dar, with its natural beauty and expanding infrastructure, has the potential to become a major medical and tourism hub in Ethiopia and the wider region.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed the importance of sustaining and expanding digitalization and reform efforts at all zonal, woreda, and kebele levels.
