HPR Considers Overhaul of Federal Ministries in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa:Ethiopia's House of People's Representatives is deliberating on a draft proclamation aimed at restructuring four federal executive ministries while maintaining the total number of ministry-level institutions at 22.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the draft proclamation was presented during the first special session of the 7th House of People's Representatives. It seeks to define the designation, organizational structure, powers, and duties of federal government executive organs.

The proposal includes significant changes, such as reorganizing the Ministry of Culture and Sports into the Ministry of Youth and Sport and re-establishing the Ministry of Tourism as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Additionally, the Ministry of Planning and Development would be renamed the Ministry of National Strategy, and the Ministry of Transport and Logistics would become the Ministry of Logistics.

Despite these proposed changes to the ministries, the overall number of ministry-level executive institutions would remain at 22. Fekadu Tessema, a member of the House and Government Representative, explained that the suggested restructuring aims to improve operational efficiency and better align the ministries with their respective mandates.

Minister of Planning and Development Fitsum Assefa presented detailed explanations of the draft proclamation to the House, as lawmakers continue to discuss the proposed institutional changes.
