Manila:The formation of Ethiopia's new Medemer Government has been described by former Speaker of the House of Peoples' Representatives, Abadula Gemeda, as a testament to the resilience, determination, and political engagement of the Ethiopian people.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the newly elected House of Peoples' Representatives convened on Monday, marking the start of a new five-year political and institutional chapter for Ethiopia. This event initiated the constitutional process for establishing the federal government. The transition follows the June 1 Seventh General Election, in which over 54 million citizens registered to participate, one of the largest electoral exercises in the country's history, as reported by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).
The 7th House of Peoples' Representatives appointed Dr. Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, beginning a new five-year government term. In his address to the House following his appointment, Prime Minister Abiy emphasized the significance of the 7th General Election, viewing it as a practical demonstration of Ethiopia's maturing democratic culture. Despite challenges and uncertainties, the participation of over 54 million citizens was highlighted as a substantial contribution to the development of the country's democratic system.
Abadula Gemeda, speaking on the Medemer Government's formation, emphasized that it should be seen within the broader context of Ethiopia's development and political journey over recent years. He noted that the government had undertaken numerous development projects, while the latest general election occurred amidst significant economic and developmental changes.
Abadula also mentioned that forces opposing Ethiopia's progress attempted to disrupt the electoral process. However, the resilience of the Ethiopian people was crucial in ensuring a successful election. He underscored that the Medemer Government is fundamentally a product of this resilience.
He further argued that Ethiopia's endurance from ancient times to the present is not due to the absence of adversaries but to the determination of its people. The election demonstrated that the Ethiopian populace would not support forces looking to undermine the nation's unity and stability.
The former Speaker expressed optimism that the new Medemer Government would harness Ethiopia's national potential to achieve concrete advancements and enhance its standing on regional and international stages. The new administration is expected to accelerate the country's development, promote lasting peace, improve citizens' livelihoods, and strengthen Ethiopia's influence globally.
