Addis Ababa:Ethiopia: More than 1.6 million international tourists visited Ethiopia during the 2018 Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY), generating over $5 billion in revenue, as reported by the Ministry of Tourism.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa revealed these figures during a press briefing about Ethiopia's preparations for World Tourism Day, scheduled for September 27, 2026.
The data showed an increase of over 300,000 international visitors compared to the previous fiscal year, with foreign exchange earnings rising by more than 21%. This year's World Tourism Day will focus on the theme 'Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism', which underscores the importance of technology in enhancing tourism services.
In line with this theme, a new Tourist Information Center has been inaugurated near Bole International Airport. This center aims to engage transit passengers with up-to-date digital information on Ethiopia's attractions and is equipped with digital maps and multimedia displays.
To further promote tourism, the government has introduced a seven-day visa-free policy for eligible transit visitors, leveraging Addis Ababa's role as a major regional aviation hub.
The Minister also noted the significant growth in MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), with Addis Ababa hosting over 220 international events last year, surpassing the initial target of 120 events.
Efforts to sustain tourism growth include developing new destinations, restoring landmarks, and upgrading tourism infrastructure. Domestic tourism is also on the rise, particularly during the September and October holiday season, as regional states enhance local services.
Additionally, the Ministry has launched a 'Land of Origins' artistic competition to celebrate Ethiopia's cultural heritage. Selamawit Kassa emphasized tourism as a crucial component of Ethiopia's economic reforms, with digital innovation and AI central to future developments in the sector.
