Manila:Negatively perceiving Ethiopia's efforts to gain reliable sea access is problematic and reflects malicious concerns against the country, according to Ambassador Zerihun Abebe, Director General for African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ambassador Zerihun highlighted Ethiopia's historical role in promoting peace and stability in the Red Sea region, countering terrorism and piracy, and cooperating with neighboring countries to enhance regional cooperation.
The ambassador stressed that Ethiopia's pursuit of sea access is driven by legitimate maritime, security, demographic, political, and economic interests, which are not exclusive to Ethiopia but can complement those of neighboring countries, contributing to regional stability.
He emphasized the shared security challenges, such as piracy and terrorism, faced by Red Sea basin countries, advocating for strengthened regional cooperation. Ambassador Zerihun stated that Ethiopia's quest for reliable sea access is based on economic, political, and security considerations and should not be misinterpreted as a threat.
