Ethiopia’s Right to Red Sea Presence Supported by ISS Director

Addis Ababa:Ethiopia's aspiration to establish a presence in the Red Sea is entirely justified, according to Paul-Simon Handy, Regional Director for East Africa and Representative to the African Union at the Institute for Security Studies.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Handy emphasized Ethiopia's crucial role in maintaining regional peace, stating that the nation deserves Red Sea access due to its significant influence in the Horn of Africa. He noted that pursuing sea access in a peaceful manner is a normal political objective for the Ethiopian government.

Handy expressed confidence that Ethiopia, in collaboration with its regional partners, will find an appropriate solution to achieve its goal. He highlighted Ethiopia's transformation in terms of regional peace, security, governance, and business, and reiterated support for the government's commitment to diplomatic means to secure sea access.

Charles Ukeje, a Nigerian professor at Obafemi Awolowo University, also highlighted Ethiopia's role as a major power in economic growth and peace-building in the region. He suggested that dialogue with neighboring countries is essential for mutually beneficial outcomes related to sea access.
