Addis Ababa:Ethiopia's BRICS membership is opening new opportunities across various sectors, as highlighted by Himanot Eshetu, Senior Researcher at the Foreign Affairs Institute (FAI).
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Himanot emphasized that the membership provides Ethiopia with greater leverage to strengthen economic partnerships, attract investment, diversify development financing, and advance its national interests on a global stage. This active engagement with major emerging economies and participation in high-level discussions on global economic and geopolitical issues make Ethiopia's BRICS membership strategically significant.
The BRICS platform serves as more than an economic grouping for Ethiopia; it is also a diplomatic engagement tool. It facilitates the advancement of national interests while addressing African priorities in crucial sectors such as global finance, technology, trade, sustainable development, and security.
A significant benefit of this membership is access to the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB). Himanot noted that this will expand funding for infrastructure and sustainable development, aligning closely with Ethiopia's national financial needs. The NDB funding is designed to complement existing partnerships, providing Ethiopia with more flexibility to implement its development priorities.
Since joining BRICS in 2024, Ethiopia has participated in various initiatives, including heads of state summits, ministerial meetings, and expert-level discussions. Beyond financial benefits, Himanot highlighted the potential for connecting with major emerging markets to broaden trade and investment opportunities. She stressed the importance of promoting competitive domestic sectors like agriculture, agro-processing, textile manufacturing, energy, tourism, and mining to capitalize on these prospects.
The platform also enhances economic cooperation and supports the broader interests of the Global South. Himanot concluded that maximizing these benefits requires coordinated institutional engagement, a focus on tangible economic outcomes, and proactive promotion of Ethiopia's trade and investment potential.
