Ethiopian Institute Urges Responsible Social Media Use for National Unity

Addis Ababa:The Ethiopian Policy Studies Institute (PSI) has highlighted the need for responsible social media use to enhance understanding and respect for Ethiopia's diverse communities, fostering social cohesion across the nation.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, PSI Director General Fikadu Tsega stressed the potential of digital platforms to bridge social and political differences, uniting citizens around common national objectives. Speaking at a study validation workshop on social media use and misuse in Ethiopia, he advocated for constructive dialogue and shared values to leverage social media in promoting national cohesion rather than exacerbating divisions.

Director General Tsega pointed out that social media could play a crucial role in promoting positive content, enhancing mutual understanding, and facilitating dialogue on political, economic, and cultural issues within the country. He noted the importance of addressing misuse through education to counteract harmful content stemming from ignorance and implementing accountability measures for deliberate actions.

While he acknowledged existing laws targeting hate speech and misinformation, Tsega emphasized that legal enforcement should be supplemented with awareness campaigns to encourage responsible use and protect individuals' rights.

The workshop, which included researchers from Addis Ababa University, PSI, and the Ethiopian Media Authority, aimed to validate the study's findings. Participants shared their expertise and perspectives to develop policy approaches that promote responsible social media use, strengthening its role in national unity and shared values.
