Ethiopia Urges Improved Coordination for Sovereign Debt Restructuring

Bangkok:Ethiopia has advocated for a more efficient and predictable process for sovereign debt restructuring, emphasizing the need for stronger creditor coordination and enhanced cooperation under the Common Framework. The aim is to assist countries in achieving financial stability and unlocking development financing.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Eyob Tekalign, Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, made this appeal during the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable held alongside the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.

Eyob highlighted Ethiopia's own debt restructuring experience, calling for clear timelines for countries entering the process, better coordination among creditors, and early caps on advisory fees. These measures, he suggested, would make the restructuring process more efficient and predictable.

Ethiopia also encouraged the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable to focus on deeper cooperation among Bretton Woods institutions. The call included reconsidering strict eligibility criteria for countries emerging from restructuring with temporarily impaired credit ratings and improving the coordination of new financing to support national development priorities.
