Ethiopia to Lead 78th UNHCR Executive Committee Session

Geneva:Ethiopia Ethiopia has been elected to chair the 78th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This election highlights the country's significant role in refugee protection, as it hosts over 1.2 million refugees and asylum seekers.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew Daka, Ethiopia's Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva, expressed gratitude to the African Group and other supporting nations. He emphasized Ethiopia's historic tradition of providing refuge, recalling the ancient Kingdom of Aksum's protection of early Muslims fleeing persecution in the seventh century. This historical example underscores the principle of non-refoulement, which is a key aspect of the 1951 Refugee Convention.

Ambassador Tsegab stressed the need for shared international responsibility in refugee protection, calling for collective action and equitable responsibility-sharing. He highlighted Ethiopia's initiatives, such as the Global Refugee Forum and the Makatet Roadmap, aimed at advancing refugee inclusion and support for host communities.

Drawing on Ethiopia's recent experience on the Executive Committee's Bureau, Ambassador Tsegab outlined a vision for a constructive committee that encourages dialogue and consensus. He pledged to work closely with UNHCR leadership to address humanitarian needs and ensure resources strengthen the agency's capacity to assist refugees effectively.

Finally, he acknowledged the contributions of Japan's Ambassador Oike and the previous Bureau, pledging close cooperation with the newly elected Executive Committee and other stakeholders to enhance the international refugee protection system.
