CAF Executive Committee Member Backs Ethiopia’s Bid to Host 2029 AFCON

ADDIS ABABA: A member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee, Maclean Letshwiti, has expressed strong confidence in Ethiopia's ability to host the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Letshwiti, who is also the former President of the Botswana Football Federation, praised Ethiopia's preparations and hospitality during the CAF 46th Ordinary General Assembly held in Addis Ababa.According to Ethiopian News Agency, Letshwiti commended the Ethiopian government's initiative, highlighting Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's announcement of plans to construct 11 stadiums in preparation for the 2029 AFCON bid. Letshwiti emphasized that Ethiopia's commitment to African football development is evident and expressed his assurance that the country could successfully host the tournament. He also noted Ethiopia's broader contributions to African development, both politically and in sports.Augustino Maduot Parek, President of the South Sudan Football Association, echoed Letshwiti's sentiments, referrin g to Addis Ababa as "the Home of Africa" and acknowledging the city's role in the African Union. Parek expressed enthusiasm about Ethiopia's infrastructure improvements, which he believes will enhance regional unity and benefit local communities through football. As vice President of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), Parek highlighted Ethiopia's membership in the organization and its significance for the region.Parek also acknowledged that the 2027 AFCON will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, and expressed optimism about Ethiopia's potential to host the 2029 edition. He emphasized the importance of infrastructure development for the region and noted that Ethiopia feels like home to many in the area. Despite procedural requirements for organizing AFCON, Parek conveyed his support for Ethiopia's bid and the positive impact it could have on the country and the region.
