Ethiopia Acquires Advanced Fighter Jets and Plans for S-400 Systems

Moscow:Ethiopia has announced the acquisition of advanced Russian-made Su-35 fighter jets and plans to receive S-400 air defence systems as part of its efforts to modernize national defence capabilities. This development aims to strengthen the protection of its airspace and reinforce strategic deterrence.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed revealed that Ethiopia had taken delivery of its first batch of Su-35 fighter jets under an agreement with Russia. The country also plans to receive four batteries of the S-400 air defence system. The announcement was made during the Prime Minister's visit to Moscow for the Third Russia-Africa Summit.

The acquisition is part of a broader effort to build a modern defence force capable of responding to evolving security challenges and protecting national interests. The Su-35 is designed for air-superiority and air-to-ground missions, providing capabilities for airspace surveillance and combat operations. The S-400 system will enhance Ethiopia's air defence architecture by engaging aerial threats and protecting strategic assets.

The modernization of Ethiopia's military is intended as a deterrent strategy, emphasizing the prevention of conflict through credible defence capabilities. This effort is significant for regional security, given Ethiopia's strategic position in the Horn of Africa and its economic interests in the Red Sea region. The Ethiopian National Defence Force is also moving towards a technology-driven defence model, integrating advanced military technologies into its operations.
