Danish Diplomat Highlights Ethiopia’s Renewable Energy Progress as Key to Enhanced Cooperation

Addis Ababa:Ethiopia's advancements in renewable energy and its ambitious agenda for green development are paving the way for increased strategic cooperation with Denmark in areas such as clean energy, water management, and climate resilience, according to a Danish diplomat.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Thomas Fleurine Sorensen, Counsellor at the Embassy of Denmark in Ethiopia, emphasized the enduring partnership between Denmark and Ethiopia during a discussion at the Third Ethiopian Water and Energy Week in Addis Ababa.

Sorensen noted that Ethiopia's progress in renewable energy and its dedication to sustainable development provide a robust platform for expanding bilateral relations. This expansion is seen particularly in the realms of knowledge exchange, institutional partnerships, and increased participation from the private sector. He cited the Assela Wind Farm as a notable example of the collaboration between the two countries.

Sorensen also highlighted the role of renewable energy investments in diversifying Ethiopia's energy resources, enhancing electricity generation, and facilitating the country's green transition. He reiterated Denmark's commitment to supporting Ethiopia's development goals, stressing the need for strong institutional and human-resource capacities to ensure sustainable progress.

The Counsellor underscored the importance of science-based, evidence-driven policymaking in Ethiopia's energy sector, commending the nation's efforts in expanding its electricity grid and advancing universal energy access. He pointed out that Ethiopia's experiences offer valuable insights for other African countries pursuing similar energy and development goals.

As Ethiopia prepares to host COP32 in 2027, Sorensen emphasized the need for strategic planning and clear priorities to advance Ethiopia's climate ambitions, while reaffirming Denmark's readiness to support Ethiopia's global climate objectives. He praised Ethiopia's bold policy decisions in renewable energy and green growth, suggesting that the country's development path could inspire neighboring nations to adopt more ambitious and sustainable development strategies.
