Addis ababa: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called on Ethiopians to seize the once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the country's future, urging participants of the National Dialogue Conference to embrace responsibility and safeguard the country's sovereignty through unity.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the Prime Minister addressed the opening session of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Conference, describing it as one of the most significant political undertakings in Ethiopia's modern history. He emphasized that the dialogue represents a rare historical opportunity to build a stronger, more united Ethiopia and to ensure future generations inherit a nation that has overcome past divisions.
PM Abiy stressed the importance of working with responsibility to ensure that future generations do not miss the opportunities that previous generations have missed. He noted that history presents defining moments for nations, which can either be turning points for renewal or missed opportunities that deepen divisions.
The Prime Minister urged participants to approach the conference with wisdom, humility, and a long-term vision for the country. He emphasized that the dialogue offers an opportunity to write a history that strengthens the nation for generations to come and warned that failing to seize this moment could weaken national cohesion and limit development.
He further highlighted the need for building consensus through mutual respect and genuine engagement with differing perspectives. Quoting Afar elders, PM Abiy underscored the importance of listening to others to fully understand their concerns and find common solutions.
PM Abiy also called on delegates to pursue solutions that serve the common good rather than narrow interests. Citing a traditional proverb from Tigray elders, he emphasized the value of collective wisdom, noting that the exchange of ideas among many people produces stronger and more enduring solutions.
The Prime Minister reminded the representatives that they carry the hopes of more than 130 million Ethiopians and generations yet to come. He urged them to deliberate with sincerity, responsibility, and a commitment to lasting peace.
PM Abiy also cautioned against external actors seeking to exploit Ethiopia's internal differences for geopolitical advantage, likening such actors to vultures that appear only after conflict. Reflecting on Ethiopia's history, he noted that periods of internal division have often created opportunities for outside interference.
He emphasized Ethiopia's sovereign right to determine its own future, declaring that national interests cannot be dictated by external forces. "We are the ones who decide our affairs," he affirmed, stressing that Ethiopia's destiny belongs to its people alone.
