Addis ababa: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the Huajian Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will contribute significantly to foreign direct investment and economic growth of Ethiopia. The premier visited the "Gobez Solar Cell" manufacturing facility and other factories located in the Huajian Special Economic Zone in Addis Ababa today.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, PM Abiy stated that the Huajian Special Economic Zone, built by a private investor, is threefold larger than the Jimma and Kombolcha industrial parks, and is comparable in size to the Hawassa Industrial Park. The zone has 30 sheds, accommodates a large number of people, and is located close to the city. Initially focused on textiles, the SEZ is now set to produce solar products, electric bicycles, shoes, and clothing.
The premier emphasized the potential of these diverse products to open up market opportunities. The "Gobez Solar Cell" factory, currently producing two gigawatts, aims to double its output next year. PM Abiy highlighted the rapid growth in solar cell production within a short timeframe, noting the zone's potential to draw significant foreign investment.
Stressing the economic benefits of such industries, PM Abiy noted their role in job creation, energy production, and service provision, as well as their advantages in foreign exchange earnings and knowledge transfer. He also mentioned that the Ethiopia Tamirt (Made in Ethiopia) movement is gaining momentum, showcasing tangible results in industrial transformation and indicating Ethiopia's potential for self-sufficiency in the coming years.
