Addis ababa: Transforming Africa’s agriculture into a climate resilient productive and competitive system needs a deliberate shift, IGAD Agriculture and Environment Division Director, Daher Elmi, said. Addressing a two-day forum on Scaling Climate Smart Agriculture in Eastern and Southern Africa, the Director highlighted Africa’s vast uncultivated land, youthful population, and burgeoning digital and innovation ecosystem as key opportunities.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Elmi emphasized that to harness these opportunities, Africa’s agriculture must undergo a transformation into a climate resilient system. He noted that climate smart agriculture is central to this transformation and stressed the necessity of a regional response, as no single country can tackle climate change or food system challenges alone.
Elmi mentioned IGAD’s strategic initiatives aimed at scaling smart agriculture and transforming food systems in the region. Awoke Mulualem, Natural Resource and Climate Change Program Director at t
he Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute, also stated that climate smart agriculture is vital for enhancing Ethiopia’s food systems’ productivity, resilience, and sustainability. He pointed to Ethiopia’s efforts in land restoration, water retention improvement, and soil health enhancement through better nutrient management.
These actions are in line with national and regional agricultural plans, as evidenced by Ethiopia’s establishment of a Climate Smart Agriculture Center of Excellence and a digital platform facilitating policy implementation. Mulualem also highlighted the importance of national and regional collaboration in realizing climate smart agriculture.
New Zealand’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Olivia Owen, emphasized agriculture’s role in livelihoods, food security, and economic transformation. She reaffirmed her country’s commitment to enhancing climate resilience, achieving food security, and reducing emissions through climate smart agriculture and innovation.
Tim Robertson, Senior Agricu
ltural Specialist at World Bank, underscored the critical importance of climate smart agriculture and the need for accelerated collaboration among all stakeholders to unlock Africa’s agricultural potential. He highlighted the significance of technology and called for increased innovation and creativity in this sector.
