First Time Voters in Addis Ababa Commit to Supporting Youth-Oriented Political Parties

Addis ababa: First time voters in Addis Ababa have vowed to cast their votes for a political party that aspires to fulfil the welfare of the youth at the upcoming 7th General Election. Ethiopia's General Election is scheduled to take place on June 1, 2026.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, more than 5.5 million voters are registered in person and through the digital "Merchaye" application, as reported by the National Election Board (NEBE). The upcoming election sees 47 political parties fielding 10,934 candidates, all presenting their policies and engaging in debates. Additionally, 55 local organizations accredited by NEBE as election observers have deployed over 60,277 agents across the regions. Nearly 170 civil society organizations are actively involved in providing awareness-raising activities and training to the electorate.

Speaking to ENA, youth in the capital described the general election as an expression of democratic practice in which the constitutional right to elect and be elected is publicly exercised. The first time voters expressed their commitment to participating in the 7th General Election, emphasizing their intention to support a party that accelerates the sustainable development and growth of the country, while also addressing the needs and aspirations of the youth.

A 12th grade first time voter, Meqdelawit Hussein, emphasized the importance of national elections as an expression of constitutional and democratic rights. "I am excited to vote for the first time to support a party with better policy alternatives," she stated. Similarly, Dawit Wondesen highlighted the critical role of active citizen participation in elections for ensuring sustainable peace and growth, asserting his readiness to exercise his constitutional right to contribute constructively to the election's success.

Dagmawit Daniel also expressed her readiness to fulfill her responsibility as a youth, aiming to ensure that the 7th General Election is free, fair, and successful. Meanwhile, Mihretu Bekele, who had never participated in previous elections, declared his willingness to support the party that he believes best advocates for national growth and prioritizes the interests of the youth.
