Competing Political Party Leaders Anticipate Transformative 7th General Election

Addis ababa: Competing political party leaders said the upcoming general election is a platform for opening a new chapter in building a developed multi-party system through democratic political competition. Voters registration for the 7th General Election scheduled to be held on June 1, 2026, has been underway since March 6, 2026.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, political party leaders are making preparations to garner votes in the 7th General Election by presenting alternative programs to the public. The leaders emphasized their commitment to using the election as an opportunity to establish a developed multi-party culture in Ethiopia through democratic political competition.

Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (Ezema) Secretary General, Wasihun Tesfaye, highlighted the significance of Ethiopia's multi-party system in fostering a democratic culture. He mentioned Ezema's constructive role in creating a conducive environment for democratic political competition. Tesfaye pointed to the party's recent general assembly, which witnessed a democratic change in leadership, as an example of internal democracy contributing to the strengthening of the country's democratic culture.

Ethiopian Democratic Union Chairman, Gebru Berhe, praised the government for facilitating a conducive political landscape. He acknowledged the Political Parties Joint Council's efforts in providing support and a monitoring system to maintain party balance. Berhe stated that his party is committed to consolidating the competing election culture, thereby contributing to the development of a multi-party system.

Agew National Assembly Vice President, Fitihalew Abay, noted that the National Election Board has created an enabling environment for the 7th General Election to be free, fair, and impartial. He added that the Peace for Ethiopia Coalition of Parties is actively participating by fielding candidates for the House of People's Representatives and regional councils. The coalition is promoting its program through media channels.

Fitihalew concluded by urging the public to actively participate in the election by voting for the party they trust.
