In the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, the management and staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG), from the Accra East Region, have provided aid to residents affected by recent flooding. The team, led by Mr Bismark Otoo, General Manager of ECG Accra East, delivered various relief items to the flood victims in a gesture of solidarity.
According to Ghana News Agency, the donation included essentials such as drinks, water, mattresses, sanitisers, and food items like corn and cassava dough. The presentation took place on Sunday at Mepe. Mr Otoo emphasized ECG's commitment to the communities it serves, noting the significant impact the flood had on local economic activities. He remarked, "ECG provides power for the economic growth of our communities, but businesses have remained at a standstill due to what happened."
Mr Otoo further explained that this initiative was funded through personal contributions from the over 810 ECG staff members in the Accra East region. It represents ECG's empathy and partnership with the affected communities. He expressed hope that the aid would help the residents return to their standard living conditions, thereby contributing to the area's economic revival.
Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for the area, along with various traditional leaders, received the relief items. They conveyed their gratitude for the timely support. Torgbe Azagba IV, the Warlord of the Mepe Traditional Area, also extended thanks on behalf of the Chiefs and people of North Tongu for the show of love and support from the ECG team.
The district has been severely affected by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam, leading to the displacement of over 1,500 homes, encompassing approximately 12,500 residents, as reported by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). In response, 21 rescue camps have been established within the district to accommodate those displaced by the flooding.
