Ethiopia’s Disaster Risk Council Convenes to Forge Response Roadmap

ADDIS ABABA — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) of Ethiopia, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen, convened its regular session to strategize on national disaster responsiveness.

According to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), the meeting in the capital city saw the attendance of ministers, senior regional officials, and relevant stakeholders, all gathered to discuss a roadmap aimed at enhancing the nation's capacity for disaster risk management.

During the opening remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Demeke outlined the council's agenda, focusing on the review and assessment of Ethiopia's current state in terms of disaster risks, challenges encountered, and prospective directions for improvement.

The session is also set to tackle the ongoing humanitarian support mechanisms, as indicated by Demeke. Discussions are anticipated to revolve around the evaluation of existing disaster risks and the establishment of robust and sustainable responses.

The Government Communication Service had previously announced that this pivotal meeting, presided over by Demeke Mekonnen, would take place, signaling the government's heightened commitment to addressing emergency situations and assisting those in urgent need.

In line with this commitment, the government has reportedly provided necessary humanitarian aid to approximately 7.3 million individuals impacted by drought and conflict within the country.
