Addis ababa: Bangladesh has expressed strong interest in expanding its bilateral cooperation with Ethiopia, highlighting growing diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, speaking at an event marking Bangladesh's Independence and National Day in Addis Ababa, Ambassador Air Vice Marshal Sitwat Nayeem stated that Bangladesh is keen to bolster its bilateral cooperation with Ethiopia. He recalled the historical relations between the two nations, noting Ethiopia's early recognition of Bangladesh as a sovereign state following its liberation in December 1971.
The ambassador highlighted a new phase in relations that began in 2016 with the establishment of Bangladesh's resident embassy in Addis Ababa. He pointed to recent economic engagements such as the Africa Bangladesh Trade Show and Business Summit, which connected exporters and importers in sectors like jute, leather, and ICT to the Ethiopian market.
Emphasizing the importance of connectivity, Ambassador Nayeem mentioned the launch of a direct air link between the two nations. The Ethiopian Airlines direct flight to Dhaka has created a vital bridge, fostering people-to-people connections and opening new opportunities for trade, commerce, and tourism.
Addressing global challenges, Nayeem underlined the shared vulnerability of both countries to climate change. He stressed the need for collective and firm action on the international stage, demanding climate justice and urgent global action to protect future generations.
On the Ethiopian side, Ambassador Dewano Kedir, Director General for Middle Eastern, Asian, and Pacific Countries Affairs, reaffirmed Addis Ababa's commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation. He highlighted the long history of relations and expanded cooperation in multilateral platforms such as the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement.
Ambassador Kedir also underscored Ethiopia's interest in deepening economic collaboration with Bangladesh, recognizing Bangladesh's expertise in industries like garment and textile technology. He called for increased investment from Bangladeshi businesspersons, pointing to ongoing economic reforms and emerging opportunities in Ethiopia.
