American Tower Corporation Launches State-of-the-Art ICT Center in Wa

Wa – The American Tower Corporation (ATC) has recently inaugurated a cutting-edge Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre at the Mangu Methodist Basic School in Wa. This initiative is part of ATC’s Digital Communities program, aimed at enhancing ICT education and accessibility in underserved areas.

According to Ghana News Agency, the ATC Ghana Head of Asset Management, who spoke at the commissioning event, the Digital Communities project is fundamental in ATC’s strategy to contribute to the development of skilled professionals for the telecommunications industry in Ghana. He emphasized that ATC’s global sustainability efforts are heavily concentrated on promoting digital literacy and employing technology to enhance educational access and improve life quality in underprivileged communities.

The project aligns with the Ghanaian Government’s Digital Ghana Agenda, which seeks to digitalize various aspects of the nation’s economy. Mr. Nortey highlighted ATC Ghana’s commitment to supporting this vision, particularly in fostering an inclusive digital economy and encouraging students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Since 2018, ATC has established and inaugurated ten such centers across Ghana, with an additional nine, including the Mangu centre, ready for commissioning. Mr. Nortey encouraged students to fully utilize the ICT learning centre as a stepping stone towards a future in STEM fields.

Madam Monica Achana, the Upper West Regional Manager of the Methodist Education Unit, expressed her gratitude to ATC for the facility, acknowledging its potential to significantly enhance ICT education not just in the school, but across the Wa Municipality and the Upper West Region. She highlighted the importance of computer literacy in fostering critical thinking in children and assured ATC of maintaining the facility well.

Madam Monica Danaah, Headmistress of the Mangu Methodist Primary School, expressed her thanks to ATC, noting that the ICT centre marked a new chapter in the school’s educational journey. She stressed the centre’s role in the comprehensive development of the students and the promising future it heralds for both the children and the community.

The newly commissioned ICT Centre is equipped with ten computers with internet connectivity, embodying a significant step towards digital empowerment in the region. The event saw the attendance of notable personalities including the Paramount Chief of the Dorimon Traditional Area, the Chief of Mangu and his elders, representatives from the Wa Municipal Education Directorate and the Municipal Assembly, among others.
