Agricultural Reforms Boost Ethiopia’s Food Sovereignty, Says State Minister

Addis ababa: Agriculture State Minister Fikru Regassa announced that reform initiatives implemented in Ethiopia's agricultural sector have significantly increased productivity and strengthened the nation's ability to ensure food sovereignty. The announcement was made at a forum in Adama, emphasizing the role of reforms in enhancing agricultural output and supporting national efforts for self-reliance in food production.According to Ethiopian News Agency, the forum, themed 'Aid to Productivity,' was organized in collaboration with the Ethiopian News Agency and the Ministry of Agriculture. The state minister highlighted that the reformist government has introduced policy measures to improve agricultural productivity within a diversified economic framework. These initiatives have boosted the country's capacity for import substitution and international competitiveness of its exports.Fikru Regassa recalled that Ethiopia's agricultural dependence on rainfall has historically posed challenges to food sovereignty . Climate change and environmental degradation have further increased vulnerabilities, making communities reliant on external assistance. However, recent policy measures and the Safety Net Development Program have enabled many citizens to transition from subsistence farming to more productive livelihoods, enhancing agricultural productivity.Seife Derbe, CEO of the Ethiopian News Agency, stated that the media is actively supporting democratic development and national progress. He emphasized the agency's collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure food sovereignty, and noted that Ethiopia is moving toward a historic victory in ending poverty and securing food sovereignty for its people.
