AI-Media e Middleman Anunciam Parceria de Inclusão de Anúncios

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Sept.

BROOKLYN, État de New York, 01 sept.

CPC to complete Afreximbank US$86m loan acquisition processes by November

The management of the Cocoa Processing Company (CPC) is confident of completing processes to secure a USD86.7 million loan facility with the Africa Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) by November 2023.

The loan would be used to pay off the firm’s debt, meet working capital needs, retool CPC’s plant and equipment for increased output, and put the company on the path to long-term profitability.

‘We’re expecting some good news by November, and we should finish our bit then look up to our major shareholders and the banks to also work on our case,’ Dr Frank Adu Asante, the Acting Managing Director of CPC told the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the company’s Annual General Meetings in Accra on Thursday.

Dr. Asante stated that the company intends to sign the deal with Afreximbank by December 2023 and receive the first tranche of the loan in January 2024.

He expressed optimism that Afreximbank’s financing would help turn around the company’s fortunes and generate enough profit to pay dividends to shareholders who had not been paid since the company started floating shares 21 years ago.

‘The local banks are also supporting us with overdrafts and cedis to do the job, we are talking about a million dollars, and we are working with almost all the banks,’ he stated.

Despite the company’s challenges, the Acting Managing Director said, ‘Management remains committed to pursuing growth and profitability in a sustainable manner.’

Mr Kwaku Owusu Baah, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CPC, indicated that they were concerned about the company’s poor operational performance and were focusing their efforts on ways to improve the situation.

He said that President Akufo-Addo’s intervention resulted in the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) converting the company’s debt to equity, which ‘significantly improved CPC’s balance sheet position.’

‘We have since the debt-equity swap, had very fruitful discussions with authorities of Afreximbank and it’s our hope that once the loan facility is approved and the machinery is retooled, CPC’s journey to recovery would be much faster and definite,’ Mr Baah said.

The Board Chairman assured shareholders that in addition to the pursuit of the Afreximbank loan facility, the Board and Management had worked together to identify some resources to retool and replace some of its factory machines.

Other measures to improve the company’s performance, include the operation of a new spread factory, three coarse and fine mills, seven packaging machines, and a six metric tonnes/day conche by the end of 2023.

He said that there were encouraging signals from Benin and Kenya regarding CPC’s Goldentree confections, which would lead the company to expand into new markets under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

CPC processed 13,096.875 metric tonnes of cocoa beans in the fiscal year under review, which was lower than the 13,494.883mt produced in the 2020/2021 financial year.

The Managing Director attributed the lower output to the lack of high-yielding and disease-resistant cocoa beans, delays in procuring parts for repairing plant and equipment, and financial constraints.

Despite posting losses in 2022, the company lowered its loss from $15 million in 2021 to $12 million in the current fiscal year, which is also less than the $18 million loss in 2020.

The Sekyere Central District assembly is working with all key stakeholders and partners to ensure that all children are enrolled in school to obtain formal education.

Madam Lois Ohene-Ayisi, the District Coordinating Director, who disclosed this, said it was important for all stakeholders in education in the area, to play their roles effectively to ensure that no child was left behind.

She was speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Complementary Basic Learners programme at Didaso Dagomba in the district.

The Complementary Basic Learners programme is an initiative of the Luminous Fund, the Link Community Development Agency, and the Mampong Diocese of the Anglican Church.

It aims at providing children between the ages of eight and 16, who are without any formal education with the basic skills needed in literature and numeracy to adequately prepare for their transition into the formal education system.

The programme, which commenced in the district in March 2022, has successfully trained and transitioned some 400 learners, made up of 189 females and 211 males in the district into the formal education system.

Some beneficiary communities in the district are Abotreye, JY, Aframso No. 2, Didaso Dagomba, Gariba, Jeduako, Kyeiase, Kyekyebon and Nteho.

Madam Ohene-Ayisi commended the organizers and all those associated with the programme for their significant efforts in making that vision a reality.

She called on parents to do their part by providing the necessities of their children to support their education.

The graduating pupils were each given a school uniform and exercise books donated by the Link Community Development.

The Asante Mampong Diocese of the Anglican Church has also provided classroom structure and furniture in preparation to forming a formal school in the community, while the district directorate of education had also transferred trained teachers to the school as well.

Over 900 young women receive mentorship training in Northren Region

A total of 915 young girls and women have received mentorship training in the Northern Region to help maximise their leadership prospects.

This was made known at the third cohort graduation ceremony for mentees of the Female Leadership Mentorship Academy, held in Tamale.

The Academy is a flagship leadership initiative instituted by the Savannah Women Integrated Development Agency (SWIDA-GH), an NGO, advocating for women empowerment with support from Plan International Ghana and Global Affairs Canada under its Women Voice and Leadership Project.

Miss Khadija Abdul-Samed, Women Voice and Leadership Project Lead at SWIDA-GH, who announced this during the event, said the project became necessary because many young women in the region needed some form of guidance and direction to advance their dreams.

She said the first edition of the academy in 2021 was run in collaboration with the University for Development Studies’ Tamale Women Commission’s Office and the Girl Child International, where 100 mentees graduated after three months of intensive mentorship.

She said in the 2022 edition, 300 young women were mentored where 200 successfully graduated, and in 2023, 200 were mentored and 115 graduated.

Ms Abdul-Samed said attaining the Sustainable Development Goal five, which is geared towards achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls, required strategic coaching and mentorship platforms, hence the initiative.

She urged women not to relent in their efforts in seeking avenues that enhanced their growth and development.

Hajia Alima Sagito-Saeed, Executive Director of SWIDA-GH, said the initiative was intended to enhance the leadership capacity of girls to enable them to participate in key decision-making processes in the country.

She said mentorship was one of the surest ways to ensuring that women and other vulnerable groups were properly equipped to rise against any form of discrimination, injustice, and abuse.

Professor Adiza Sadik, Dean of International Programmes and Institutional Linkages at the Tamale Technical University, said strategic female mentorship had ripple effect on both global and national development, adding women must brace themselves for mentorship.

Professor Sadik emphasised need for women to amplify their voices on issues of discrimination, abuse and injustice and said their voices were catalyst for change in society.

Mr Eric Ayaaba, Northern Programmes Influencing and Impact Areas (NPIIA) Manager at Plan International Ghana, who was represented at the ceremony, expressed satisfaction at the impact of the project and pledged the organisation’s support towards sustaining the programme.

Miss Yakubu Memunatu Wumbei, who made a statement on behalf of the 2023 cohort mentees, commended SWIDA-GH and partners for the exposure and empowerment to achieving their goals and aspirations.

The graduands received certificates of participation while some mentors at the academy also received citations for their contributions to the project.
