Millions of seedlings have been planted in Oromia and Amhara regional states as part of the premier’s call to break tree planting record.
While launching the campaign today, Oromia State Chief Administrator Shimeles Abdissa said we will strengthen the work we have started in Green Legacy Initiative in order to reduce the problems we are facing in climate change.
According to him, the Oromia region has been facing many problems related to climate change in the past years.
There has been a lot of damage to people and animals because of the drought in the lowlands of the region.
He also stated that the participation of the people of the region through the Green Legacy Initiative in the past years is yielding results to deal with the problem in a sustainable manner.
Shimelis urged the people to strengthen the planting of saplings as the activity has a large place in the culture of the Oromo people.
The chief administrator, together with senior officials of the federal government and residents of East Shewa and Adama city have planted saplings in Adama area.
Similarly, millions of tree seedlings have been planted in the Amhara Regional State since this morning.
Launching the seedlings planting campaign today, Amhara State Chief Administrator Yelikal Kefale said the participation of the entire people of the region in planting saplings is encouraging.
"Planting saplings today is putting tomorrow's economic and social development on the right foundation," he noted.
The chief administrator pointed out that the seed planting campaign should be done with special attention as it will enable Lake Tana, the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and other rivers and lakes to serve for many years.
Yelikal further said the initiative should be invigorated since it ensures the sustainable benefits of the society by planting saplings that are used for shade, beauty, fodder and food.
