Ghana Mourns Former First Lady Theresa Kufuor with State Funeral

Accra – Ghana held a solemn state funeral for former First Lady Theresa Aba Kufuor on Thursday. The event, marked by a requiem mass at the Christ the King Catholic Church in Cantonments, Accra, saw the attendance of numerous dignitaries, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, First Lady Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other government officials.

According to Ghana News Agency, The funeral was attended by high-profile personalities, including former President John Dramani Mahama and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. The ceremony was a blend of sorrow and gratitude, with mourners from various backgrounds paying their respects and reflecting on Mrs. Kufuor’s unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and the nation. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, her husband of 61 years, lauded her supportive and well-mannered nature. Her children described her as a disciplinarian who instilled the fear of God in them.

First Lady Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, reading a tribute on behalf of the State, highlighted Mrs. Kufuor’s optimism, support for her husband’s political career, and advocacy for the free compulsory Universal Basic Education Programme. Wreaths were laid by various representatives, and Mrs. Kufuor’s casket, adorned with the national colors, was carried by personnel of the Ghana Air Force. Her body will be taken to Kumasi for final funeral rites before a private burial on November 18, 2023. Mrs. Theresa Kufuor was born on October 25, 1935, in Kumasi and was the seventh of ten children.
