Generative AI for Africa Hackathon Showcases Innovative Projects in Addis Ababa

ADDIS ABABA: The Generative Artificial Intelligence for Africa Hackathon’s final project expo is currently underway at the Abrehot Library in Addis Ababa. The event, which concludes tomorrow, features nine finalist projects, with winners set to receive awards.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Founder and CEO of Africa Silicon Valley (A2SV), the projects presented at the expo were selected from a pool of 3,700 students from 47 African countries. Among the finalists, three projects are from Ethiopia.

Varol emphasized that such competitions provide university and high school students with the opportunity to develop digital solutions for the continent’s most pressing issues. He stressed the importance of embracing artificial intelligence in Africa, seeing these projects as seeds of innovation that could spread throughout the continent, starting from Ethiopia.

Finalist Christian Nebot from Tunisia shared that their project is an e-learning platform tailored for autistic students, addressing a significant gap in educational resources for this demographic in Africa. Another finalist, Melek Messoussi, introduced HealthHub, a platform combining AI technology with neuro-science to advance medical understanding and treatment of brain tumors.

Ethiopian finalist Abigiya Getachew’s project focuses on transforming education in Africa through AI-powered solutions, aiming to enhance access and personalized learning for students across the continent.

The Africa Hackathon plans to award a total of 30,000 USD to the winners of the competition.
