Dormaa Ahenkro Midwife Warns Against Mobile Phones Near Breast Tissue

DORMAA AHENKRO — Regina Amponsah, a midwife at the Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital, has cautioned women against the habit of placing mobile phones near their breasts, citing potential cancer risks.

According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Amponsah’s advice was given during an interview in Dormaa Ahenkro, Bono Region, subsequent to the Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities at the hospital. She expressed concerns that vibrations and heat from mobile phones could potentially lead to breast cancer if the breast area is subjected to prolonged exposure.

The event, which marked the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, was a collaborative effort between the hospital and the George Gyewu Family Foundation aimed at public education on breast cancer, as well as promoting screening and examination services.

Madam Amponsah further outlined additional risk factors for breast cancer, including excessive alcohol intake, smoking, obesity, and the use of anti-ageing pills containing hormones, particularly for women.

Highlighting infrastructural challenges, she noted the absence of a mammogram at the Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital. This lack of equipment forces referrals to the Regional Hospital in Sunyani for suspected cases of breast cancer, complicating the screening process for accurate detection, confirmation, and diagnosis.

The midwife made an urgent call to individuals and NGOs to assist the hospital in acquiring a mammogram to improve the quality of medical services provided to the community.

In an effort to educate the public and reduce breast cancer incidence, Madam Amponsah mentioned that the hospital has been actively conducting educational sessions in churches, at local durbars, on radio stations, and through personal interactions.

Madam Amponsah identified the presence of hardened lumps, discharge of blood fluid, and rashes on the breast and nipples as warning signs of breast cancer. She urged women to seek immediate medical attention for any of these symptoms to ensure timely and effective treatment.
