Czech Premier Fiala Explores Ethiopia’s Water Sector Achievements with Czech Support

Addis Ababa — Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala toured the Ministry of Water and Energy today to observe the progress made from the longstanding water sector cooperation between Ethiopia and the Czech Republic.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Fiala received briefings from himself and State Ministers Abrha Adugna and Sultan Wali. They discussed the tangible outcomes of the collaborative efforts between the two nations, particularly in the domain of hydrological studies and research.

Minister Itefa underscored the significant financial contributions of the Czech Republic, amounting to over 38 million euros towards Ethiopia’s hydrological studies. “The Czech Republic has been a valuable partner in our endeavors, particularly in conducting underground and surface water research. Their financial investment has greatly supported studies across various regions including the Somali, Sidama, Southern, and Amhara regions,” he stated.

The Czech Geological Survey (CGS) boasts a partnership with Ethiopia that extends back to the late 1970s, focusing on hydro-geological mapping crucial for managing the country’s water resources amid challenges of population growth and climate change.

The bilateral cooperation, with roots reaching back to the early 20th century, reinforces the sustained and resilient relationship between Ethiopia and the Czech Republic. Prime Minister Fiala’s visit signifies a continued commitment to addressing water security and promoting sustainable development objectives within the region.
