Anloga: President Akufo-Addo Seeks to Strengthen NPP’s Foothold in Volta Region
During the 61st Hogbetsotsoza durbar in Anloga, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed his aspiration for the Volta Region, traditionally a stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), to align more closely with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). The President’s remarks centered on his belief that the region’s political allegiance has historical roots with the NPP.
According to Ghana News Agency, his conviction stems from both ideological and historical perspectives. He highlighted that in the 1960 election, Dr J.B. Danquah, representing the United Party, a precursor to the NPP, achieved significant victories in Anlo and Ho West. This historical context, the President argued, underpins his determination to reverse the NPP’s electoral fortunes in the Volta Region.
“I’m convinced the NPP should be the natural home of the people of the Volta Region,” said President Akufo-Addo, underscoring his commitment to engaging the region until it ‘returns home to its proper political roots.’
During the event, Togbi Sri III, the Awoamefia of Anlo, recognized the development projects undertaken in Anlo under the President’s tenure. President Akufo-Addo promised to expedite the completion of ongoing projects, including the Anloga District Hospital, part of the ambitious Agenda 111 initiative. He assured that the infrastructural projects, such as roads, which the Awoamefia mentioned, would receive due attention, boasting of his government’s record in the road sector in the region.
Togbi Sri III also presented a list of urgent needs for the Anlo Traditional Area to the President. These included the dredging of the Keta Lagoon, construction of the proposed Keta Port, and resolution of the water supply issues in various communities. Addressing these concerns, the President noted, would significantly alleviate the challenges faced by the people in the area.
The festival, themed ‘Climate Change, a Challenge to Lands below Sea Level, a Concern of the Anlo State and the Stakeholders,’ was historically marked by the attendance of Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II, the Overlord of Dagbon, and his entourage. Additionally, representatives from various regions and the diplomatic corps were present, along with politicians, tourists, and prominent local figures, including academicians. The durbar was chaired by Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, former Speaker of Parliament.
